  • Huawei Pura 80 Ultra is rumored to launch with an industry-leading 1/1.3-inch periscope camera.
  • It will also feature a 50 MP 1-inch type sensor and a 50 MP ultra-wide.

Huawei seems to be taking smartphone photography to the next level with the upcoming Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. Details about its camera setup have surfaced on Weibo, and it looks like the company is aiming to outshine even the impressive periscope camera on the vivo X200 Pro.

The Pura 80 Ultra is rumored to launch in Q2 2025, likely in April, as the successor to the Pura 70 Ultra, which debuted earlier this year. The prototype specs reveal exciting upgrades.

So, first, a 50 MP sensor with a 1-inch type sensor and variable aperture (f/1.6 to f/4.0), likely similar to the one used in the Pura 70 Ultra, along with retractable lens technology and sensor-shift OIS. Another 50 MP ultra-wide, although details remain unclear.

The star of the show would be the periscope, featuring a massive 1/1.3-inch periscope sensor with a multifocal lens design. However, this is still in the technical testing phase, and changes could occur before mass production. If mass produced, this will be the world’s largest periscope camera.

For context, the Pura 70 Ultra’s telephoto lens featured a 50 MP 90 mm periscope camera with a smaller sensor. The Pura 80 Ultra could bring a larger or similar aperture, and short minimum focusing distance, setting a new benchmark in mobile zoom photography.

Currently, the best periscope hardware can be found on the HONOR Magic 7 RSR Porsche Edition, a 1/1.4” sensor with f/1.88 aperture. For context, the vivo X200 Pro uses the same sensor with f/2.67 aperture. I can’t wait to see what Huawei can do with the 1/1.3” sensor and potentially a large aperture.
