Meta hosted its Meta Connect 2024 event yesterday wherein the Facebook parent company showcased a variety of products including the first augmented reality (AR) glasses. The AR glasses have taken almost a decade to come into existence as Meta showcased a prototype of these glasses equipped with holographic displays and feature support for Meta AI. Meta has confirmed that the Orion glasses won’t sell commercially for now but a special version is being planned for customers that will be rolled out in the next few years.

Meta Orion AR Glasses: Features
The Meta Orion AR Glasses have been codenamed Project Nazare and in terms of design, these look like a pair of regular glasses but offer AR features. The glasses are equipped with holographic displays that allow wearers to view 2D and 3D content on top of objects within their Field of Vision. Meta claims that the device can handle multitasking and offer video playback and even has the power to show “life-size holograms of people”.
Along with offering support for AR apps and entertainment features, the Orion AR glasses prototype works seamlessly with Meta AI which is the company’s AI-powered assistant. Meta says that it will be able to perform visual lookups when a user is viewing objects and a demo will show its contextual information. For example, a recipe for chaat with its ingredients placed on the table.
The Orion glasses will work with messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook so the wearer will be able to view and send messages via holographic display. Meta also showcased the use of gestures to play AR games while wearing the headset and there is also a controller for AR glasses that is visible in images.

As mentioned above, Meta Orion AR Glasses won’t be available to customers for now. Only the company’s employees will be able to use the prototype to continue developing Meta’s consumer AR product, which will be based on the lines of Orion. Select external audiences will have access to AR Glasses.
There is no fixed date about when the commercial version will launch, but Meta says new devices are expected in the next few years. The current priorities of the brand are bettering the visuals on AR display, reducing the form factor, and making it affordable.
