TL; DR
- A report from Android Headlines claimed parent company OPPO is dismantling OnePlus, citing canceled products, layoffs, reduced R&D, and shrinking market presence.
- OnePlus India publicly rejected the claims, calling them “false” and “unverified,” and said operations in India continue as usual.
- No official response has come from OnePlus USA yet.
The conversation started after a report by Android Headlines, titled “OnePlus Is Being Dismantled.” The report described OnePlus as a brand in decline, based on sources across North America, Europe, and Asia (or India). It alleged job cuts, downsized headquarters and R&D activity, canceled devices such as the OnePlus Open 2 (read story) and OnePlus 15s, and a gradual pullback from several markets.
The report also pointed to falling global shipments, especially in China and India, and loss of share to brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, and vivo. It framed this as a slow wind-down strategy, where commitments are maintained while the brand steadily loses relevance, eventually becoming absorbed into OPPO.
OnePlus’ Much-needed Response is Here
OnePlus India responded within a day. Spokesperson Robin Liu posted on X, directly addressing the report:
“Recent unverified reports claiming OnePlus is shutting down are false. OnePlus India’s business operations continue as normal. We urge all stakeholders to verify information from official sources before sharing unsubstantiated claims. We’re operating as usual and will continue to do so. Never Settle.”
OnePlus India denies any shutdown and says business continues as planned. India remains one of the brand’s largest markets, with ongoing sales and retail activity.
There has been no official statement from OnePlus USA yet. Industry chatter suggests scaled-back activity in North America and parts of Europe, including fewer product tiers, long gaps in Nord series availability in the US, and reduced marketing. These points remain unconfirmed.
OnePlus continues to sell flagship models such as the OnePlus 15 (review) and OnePlus 15R (review) in North America and remains one of the few Chinese smartphone brands still operating there alongside Motorola.
If restructuring does occur, it is expected to take the form of consolidation rather than a full withdrawal. OPPO and OnePlus share manufacturing, software platforms, and supply chains, which makes a brand-level merge more likely than a sudden shutdown.
OnePlus is Going Through Other Problems
Separately, OnePlus is dealing with regulatory pressure in India. OnePlus India faces a GST demand of around ₹93 crore related to its “Green Line Worry Free Solution,” a lifetime display replacement program for devices affected by green line issues.
Authorities reviewed the program for FY24 and FY25 and treated parts of it as taxable supplies. The company has paid ₹10 crore under protest and disclosed additional GST notices that bring total demands close to ₹280 crore. This issue is not directly connected to the dismantling rumors, though it adds to the broader context.
Another similar case involves OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau. In January 2026, Taiwanese prosecutors issued an arrest warrant accusing him of illegally recruiting Taiwanese engineers for Chinese firms. The case is tied to cross-strait legal restrictions but it should not affect OnePlus’s day-to-day operations.
I have a OnePlus Device, Should I be Worried?
If you are using a OnePlus device, there is no immediate reason for concern. Even in a scenario where the brand is scaled down, software updates and services would likely continue through OPPO, given how closely the two already operate.
Based on OnePlus’ current statements, the company says it is not shutting down, and the report published by Android Headlines remains a speculation only. More clarity will come with time if any restructuring is actually planned. What are your thoughts on this situation? Let us know in the comments.
