TL; DR
- Leaker Lanzuk says Galaxy Z TriFold 2 faces a cost-driven delay beyond its original schedule.
- Samsung’s redesigned hinge aims for uniform thickness and lighter weight across all three sections.
- Samsung’s rollable, slidable phone is now gaining momentum and may launch before the TriFold 2.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z TriFold in severely limited quantities in 2025 and 2026, with reports calling the phone a showcase of the company’s engineering skills rather than something that it plans to make at scale. Despite that, the Galaxy Z TriFold (hands-on) sold out in minutes.
Given that context, the bar for the TriFold 2 was already high before development was even confirmed. Per a fresh post from South Korean leaker Lanzuk (yeux1122) on Naver, the TriFold is not only being developed, but it’s now facing a delay, and for the first time in the history of smartphone delays, I’m actually excited about one.

TriFold 2 Is Reportedly Delayed
Development of the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 is actively underway, including a new hinge system. However, “recent issues such as costs” have made it highly likely the launch will slip beyond its originally planned schedule, which isn’t specified at the time of writing this article.
What the new hinge is designed to achieve is more concrete. It should offer uniform thickness across all three folded sections, which would correct one of the first model’s most visible compromises, alongside meaningful reductions in overall thickness and weight.

For reference, the Galaxy Z TriFold measures 12.9 mm when closed and weighs 309 grams, compared to 8.9 mm and 215 grams for the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (review), which is by far Samsung’s slimmest foldable.

Bringing a three-panel folding device anywhere near those figures is a real engineering challenge. The fact that Samsung is reportedly choosing redesign over speed suggests they recognize the cost of the original model’s bulk in terms of everyday usability.
To me, it also sounds like the phone isn’t as high on the company’s priority list as some other models, and that’s one of the reasons I’m excited about this delay.

A Slideable Samsung Phone Could Arrive Before TriFold 2
In the blog post, Lanzuk implies that Samsung’s long-rumored slidable smartphone is gaining momentum and could arrive sooner than previously expected.
Unlike a foldable OLED display that unfolds around a hinge, a rollable OLED display extends from within the chassis. A separate South Korean report puts the target at H1 2028.

I have followed Samsung’s rollable display concepts since the Flex Hybrid at CES 2024. A commercial Samsung device with a sliding OLED would be the most significant form-factor development in smartphones since the original Galaxy Fold.
However, at the end of the report, I’d also like to mention that these are rumors, and nothing has been officially confirmed by Samsung. So, take them with a pinch of salt.
