Tesla has launched its second car in India, the Tesla Model Y L. The new Tesla Model Y L is basically an extended long wheelbase version of the Tesla Model Y and comes with three-row seating that has a 2+2+2 seat layout. The Model Y L also brings the first dual-motor AWD Tesla Model Y variant and has an WLTP claimed range of 681 kilometers. The new Tesla Model Y L has been launched at a price of ₹61.99 lakh for the sole long wheelbase AWD variant, which offers 681 kilometers of range. To recap, the starting price of the Tesla Model Y is ₹59.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base variant with 500 kilometers of range, and goes up to ₹67.89 lakh for the top-end Long Range Premium RWD variant that offers 661 kilometers range. Strange how the long wheelbase AWD variant of the Tesla Model Y offers more range than the Long Range variant.

The Tesla Model Y L isn’t very different from the Tesla Model Y in terms of what you get in the car, in terms of features and comfort and space. Tesla doesn’t give us the battery numbers officially, but the global variant of the Tesla Model Y is powered by an 85kWh battery, which is said to produce 456 bhp of power and 590 Nm of torque. This also makes the Model Y L the most powerful Tesla on offer in India. The Model Y L comes with an all-wheel drive configuration and Tesla is claiming a 0 to 100 kmph speed of 5 seconds. It also supports fast DC charging that claims to charge the Model Y L for a range of 288 kms in just 15 minutes.

Coming to dimensions, this is where the people will be able to differentiate between the Model Y and the Model Y L. The Tesla Model Y L is 4,969 mm long and 1,982 mm wide. The wheelbase of the Model Y L is 3,040 mm, which is 150 mm more than the standard Model Y, and it is also taller by 44 mm at 1,668 mm height. The 169mm ground clearance is also 2 mm more than the standard Model Y. The wheel size, however, remains unchanged. The Model Y L also gets 19-inch alloy wheels, just like the Tesla Model Y.

The interior is largely unchanged from the basic Model Y, continuing with the same minimalist dashboard and a large central 16-inch touchscreen which is where almost all functions are operated from. The Model Y L also comes with the 8-inch screen for the rear passengers. As compared to the 5-seat version, the Tesla Model Y L also gets an improved sound system, along with extendable thigh support for the front seats. There are captain seats in the second row which also get electronically folding armrests, one-touch folding, heating, and ventilation. The third-row also gets powered recline, and one-touch folding vents. The Tesla Model Y L gets either an all-black, or a dual tone black and grey colour for an additional ₹95,000.

Other features include powered, heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats, ambient lighting, powered front and rear AC vents, eight cameras, panoramic glass roof, connected features and streaming services, heated steering and windshield and a dashcam that also records the cabin. On the safety front, the Model Y L gets 9 airbags (2 more than the standard version) and automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot collision warning and lane departure avoidance. As before, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving feature remains an optional extra for ₹6,00,000, although most of these features can’t be activated and used here due to stringent regulations in India.
