TL; DR
- The government has formally addressed viral social media claims about E20 ethanol-blended petrol.
- Engine damage, insurance invalidity, and ant attraction claims are all said to be baseless.
- Fuel ethanol undergoes fermentation and distillation before blending, making sugarcane mixing claims false.
For the last few days, we’ve been seeing viral social media posts claiming that India’s Ethanol Blended Petrol causes engine damage, attracts insects, and voids vehicle insurance. This has prompted the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to issue a formal clarification via the official PIB portal (Release ID: 2277210). Here are the key concerns and the responses.

Does E20 Petrol Damage Your Engine?
The ministry stated that “no widespread issues of engine failure or vehicle breakdown attributable to ethanol blending have been reported” since the introduction of E20.
Further clarifying its claim, the release notes that the ethanol blending program has been implemented in phases since 2003, with higher blending levels (E20) rolled out only after technical evaluation and consultation with automobile manufacturers, “from 2023 onwards.”

Does Using E20 Invalidate Your Vehicle Insurance?
The ministry mentions that claims suggest E20 petrol “could affect vehicle insurance validity were clarified by the concerned stakeholders and found to be incorrect.”
According to a recent Autocar India report, ICICI Lombard stated that “motor insurance policies remain fully valid by the use of E20 fuel” and that the company doesn’t treat the use of E20 fuel in older vehicles as negligence, which is a good thing.
However, the report noted that whether insurance claims will be rejected on the grounds of long-term E20 damage (due to ethanol’s corrosive nature) remains unresolved by the company.

Is Sugarcane Juice Being Mixed Directly Into Petrol?
The ministry directly called out this claim, saying “certain individuals are creating and sharing videos on social media falsely portraying sugarcane juice as being mixed directly with petrol” and describing such content as “misleading and baseless.”
Given that ethanol is produced through fermentation and distillation, the final product is chemically different from the raw material. “Therefore, claims suggesting a link between E20 fuel and ant attraction have no scientific basis and are not supported by scientific evidence.”
“The Government remains committed to implementing the program in a safe, transparent, and consumer-centric manner, guided by scientific evidence and continuous stakeholder engagement.”
